Winter weekends in Cabo: when the ramp fills up
Cabo's weather is at its best from December to April, and so is demand. On the busiest weekends the private ramp at SJD is full and good aircraft are booked early. A little planning keeps your dates.

Most of the year, a private flight to Los Cabos is easy to arrange at a week's notice or less. Then winter arrives. Dry skies, warm days and whales offshore draw travelers from across North America, and a handful of holiday weekends concentrate that demand into a few days. If your trip falls on one of them, the rules of the game change.
The dates that fill first
Year after year, the same periods are the busiest for private flights into Cabo:
| Period | When | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving | Late November | Busy outbound on Wednesday, home on Sunday |
| Christmas and New Year | Late December to early January | The busiest fortnight of the year |
| Martin Luther King Jr. weekend | Mid-January | A busy long weekend |
| Presidents' Day | Mid-February | Heavy demand from across the US |
| Spring break | March, varying by school | Several busy weeks in a row |
| Easter | March or April | A strong final peak before summer |
On these dates the problem is rarely the flight itself. It is everything around it: the right aircraft being free, the crew's schedule, and space for the aircraft to wait in Cabo.
Why parking gets tight
An airport has only so much ramp for private aircraft. On peak days at SJD, aircraft arrive faster than they leave, and space for aircraft that want to stay all week can run short. When that happens, operators may drop passengers and fly the aircraft elsewhere, then bring it back for the return.
That choice has a price. If the aircraft and crew stay in Cabo, you pay daily minimums and crew hotels while they wait. If the aircraft flies home and comes back, you pay for those extra positioning flights instead. For a long stay the second option is often better value; for a short weekend the first usually wins. Your advisor prices both so you can see the difference.
The aircraft are booked too
Holiday demand is not only a Cabo problem. The same weeks are busy for Aspen, Palm Beach and the Caribbean, and the most popular aircraft categories are spoken for early. Super-midsize jets, which fly from the East Coast to Cabo nonstop, are in particular demand. The earlier you ask, the more choice you have, both of aircraft and of departure times.
How to keep your dates
- Ask early. For the holidays, start planning well before the season rather than the week before.
- Shift by a day. Leaving on Thursday instead of Friday, or coming home on Monday instead of Sunday, avoids the sharpest peaks.
- Plan the return at the same time. The Sunday after a holiday is often busier than the outbound day.
- Be open on aircraft. If your first choice is booked, a comparable aircraft from another operator can keep the plan intact.
- Watch for one-way flights. Aircraft that drop passengers in Cabo often fly home empty, and those legs can suit a flexible return.
Peak days and price
Holiday demand shows up in the price as well as in availability. Some operators apply higher rates on their busiest days, and the aircraft that remain available late in the booking window may be farther away, which adds positioning time to the quote. Crew hotels in Cabo also cost more over the holidays when the aircraft waits with you. None of this is hidden in our quotes, which show each item, but it is another reason to ask early.
A holiday plan that works
Consider a family of six from Dallas who want New Year in Cabo. They ask in early autumn, when every category is still open. A light jet would carry them, but with luggage for a week and two sets of golf clubs, a midsize jet is the comfortable choice. They leave on the Friday before the holiday weekend rather than the Saturday, which avoids the busiest arrival day at SJD.
Because they are staying eight nights, the aircraft does not wait in Cabo. It flies home after dropping them and returns for the pickup, and their quote shows that this costs less than eight days of daily minimums and crew hotels. The return is booked for the Monday after the holiday rather than the Sunday. Nothing about the plan is complicated; it simply started early enough to have choices.
Weather in winter
Winter is the dry season and storms are rare, but it is not always calm. Northerly winds can blow for a few days at a time, making the sea choppy for boat trips and whale watching, though they rarely affect flights. Mornings and evenings are cooler than many expect, so pack a layer for dinner by the water.
Arriving on a peak day
Even with a good plan, a holiday arrival at SJD is busier than usual. Expect more aircraft on the ramp and a little more time at each step of the arrival. The handler will keep things moving, and private arrivals remain far quicker than the airline terminals, but it is worth leaving slack before a dinner reservation on the first night. Roads between the airport and Cabo San Lucas are busier too, so allow extra time for the drive.
The quieter alternatives
If your dates are flexible, the weeks between the peaks are some of the best of the year. Early December, the second half of January and late April all offer winter weather with far less competition for aircraft and parking. May is hotter but quieter still, and often good value.
What it looks like done right
The smoothest holiday trips share a pattern: the request arrives early, the return is booked alongside the outbound, the group is flexible by a few hours, and the decision about where the aircraft waits is made with the costs in view. Do that, and Presidents' Day in Cabo feels like any other weekend, only warmer.
